A Tale of Two Pianos: April 28, 2019

20th Anniversary Look Back: When the Instruments Stole the Show

Typically, it’s the performers who take center stage, but in the 20-year history of the Concert Series, there have been occasions when instruments—and even the church’s bell tower—have taken the spotlight. From the parish’s magnificent organ to donated pianos, to the bells pealing in the bell tower, these sound makers have each enjoyed their proverbial 15 (or, more accurately, 90) minutes of fame. Here’s a look at a memorable moment.

Two separately donated pianos—a Yamaha model G3 and Kawai KG2—took center stage during the spring 2019 concert Art for the Young at Heart, an interdisciplinary celebration of music, dance, and art. Pianists Heather Adelsberger, Elizabeth Hill, and Molly Orlando brought the instruments to life in a wide-ranging repertoire that included excerpts from Modest Mussorsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Béla Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion and Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals.  A PBS medley of children’s numbers, with familiar tunes from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and other favorites, rounded out the concert. That afternoon, it was truly a beautiful day in the Clarksville neighborhood, as music, dancing, art, and the joyful sounds of two donated pianos brought smiles to concertgoers of all ages.
